Too Much Bread Machine Choice!
If your looking at this hub then your looking for a bread machine but don't want to spend too much. There are so many bread machines around this price range that do very similar things it can be very difficult to choose between them. I have been where you are, I started with a bread machine under $100 and only got a more expensive one as I wanted to try an expand the range of bread I eat.
There are three bread machines in this price range that keep popping up again and again. These are the oster bread maker, the sunbeam and the bread man. I'll go into the details of each and a summation of their features in a moment, but before we have a look at those I want to tell you what you get for a bread maker in this price range. For under $100 you'll get a bread machine which will bake you a fresh loaf ready for the morning, that'll generally do 2-3 different types of bread. Bread machines in this price range tend to be quite quiet but can be a little big for the size of loaf you get. In summary if you want a bread machine that'll do many different types of bread, want low carb/ gluten free options, and/or regularly eat 3 pound loaves look at a bread machine in a higher price bracket. It would be nice to get a bread machine that does all that for under $100, but I'm yet to find one that genuinely does. If you know of a bread machine that has those features in this price range let me know!
Oster Bread Machine
The Oster bread machine ( or the Oster 5838 bread maker) comes in around $60. For this you get a good looking bread machine that'll do you a nice two pound loaf and keep in warm for yo or up to an hour. The 13 hour delay timer means you'll get a fresh loaf in the morning if you put the ingredients in before bed. The bread pan and paddle are non stick, but not the best kind of non stick if you want that look to spend over $200! The Oster bread machine has three crust settings to choose from (light, medium and dark), it does have 18 other settings for different types of doughs, jams etc. However reviews I've found suggest that getting the Oster bread machine to do things other than bread can be difficult.
In summary the Oster is a great little bread machine that will make you fresh bread when you want it. It does have settings for other things but for best results for doughs, jams etc look at a different machine. All in all very good bread machine for $60!
For most people the Oster is their first bread machine, this is a great machine for first timers asit is easy to use and is comfortable with a relatively small range of breads. A good bread machine to learn on. You'll find that baking with a bread machine or without is an art and a machine like this is a good introduction to it.
Sunbeam Bread Machine
The sunbeam bread machine is similar to the Oster but does have some distinct differences. The sun beam is the easiest to use, and easiest to clean. Priced at around $55 it's one of the cheapest bread machines available. This bread machine does have a manual but apparently it is not much use in terms of recipes so if you decide on his one get a recipe book! Like the Oster bread machine the sun beam has a 13 hour delay timer for fresh bread in the morning! The rapid bake function can give you a 2 pound loaf in an hour, useful if your going to have guests around or you forgot to put on the bread machine before bed! According to long term users the sun beam is very reliable and should last you years. Like the Oster, the Sunbeam is limited in it's setting for different doughs etc.
On the downside this machine has been known to produce the odd deflated loaf. After having a search around the culprit seems to be the recipes provided in the manual, if you add a bit more yeast in there then you should get the deflating issue. For $55 the odd deflated loaf is not a bad price to pay.
As with all bread machines give it a couple of tries when making your first loaves as each one requires a few goes before you get it right. Don't be tempted to double up or half the recipes as you might find yourself left with a sticky mess to clean up!
Breadman Bread Machine
The Breadman is good basic bread machine, like the sunbeam and the oster it has a 13 hour delay timer, and a keep warm cycle that lasts an hour. This bread machine also has a fast bake option which will give you a fresh loaf in just under an hour. Again like most bread machines in this range the advantage of this machine is it's simplicity and ease of use. This makes it ideal for beginners and people who don't wanna get too complicated! It weighs in at around $60 so is a similar price a the other two.
The screen is easier to read than the sunbeam and the Oster, the recipes in the manual provide you with a good loaf time after time. However I feel the Breadman is the ugliest of the three. All three of these bread machines are very similar with a few differences I hope the brief summary in this hub has helped you decide which one you may want. If your looking at something just a little more pricey then the bread machine below maybe for you.
Bread Machines Over $100
Bread Machine Raisin Bread Recipe
Best Bread Machine Just Over $100
If you want your bread machine to do a little more but don't want to spend a fortune then go for the Panasonic SD-YD250. Coming in at around $125-130 it is more pricey than the budget bread machines but you get more bang for your buck. With a wide variety of settings that actually work. It'll bake the bread mixture slightly differently depending what you want it. The Panasonic is quiet quiet, and will bake loaves of several different sizes. The bread pan and kneader are made of super non sticky stuff making it really easy to clean. All in all this bread machine is fantastic if you want to spend a little extra and does give you a step up in features and recipes you can bake
